Queen Palm trees need properly fertilized 3-4 times per year using the correct fertilizers (and methods), and trimmed at least 2 times per year in order to maintain healthy and happy Queen Palm trees. Queen Palm trees that are not fertilized at least twice per year are at high risk of developing diseases such as Frizzle Top, Bud Rot (Crown Rot), and other infections related to sick or diseased Queen Palm trees.
Even though Queen Palm trees need fertilized 3-4 times per year to stay healthy, they are still one of the best palm trees that you can plant in your desert landscape.Aside from the fertilizing requirements, Queen Palm trees are low maintenance, and need minimal trimming compared with other types of trees. They also use a lot less water than larger ‘dicot’ trees (think trees that are not palms). Queen Palm trees are also highly unlikely to ever blow down in a storm, since they are native to tropical environments where high winds are the norm.
Queen Palm Trimming
Trimming Queen Palm trees is an important part of keeping your Queen palm tree healthy and happy. Queen Palm trimming should be performed every time that your Queen Palm tree is fertilized and fed. How often should Queen Palms be fertilized, and what type of fertilizer for Queen Palms? (Read-on, Leafy™ has your answer!) 🍃

What does a properly trimmed Queen Palm look like ?
Trimming Queen Palms is not only a great way to clean up the appearance of your tropical trees, but it also helps by reducing the places in your palm trees that bugs can live, hide (and breed!)
Not only does properly trimming a Queen Palm improve the beauty of your palm tree, but it also reduces the wind resistance during storms. Even though Queen Palm trees are native to tropical climates and are designed to withstand high winds, if your Queen Palm is planted in soft soil, it could still blow down in a storm if not regularly and properly trimmed. 🌴
How often water palm tree ?
How often should you water your palm tree? Maybe a better question might be, how many days do you go without having a drink? (That’s what I thought!) Palm trees appreciate being watered at least every few days, and in the summertime, it may be necessary to water your palm tree every 1-2 days, depending on temperature and humidity. If you live in a hot, dry climate, watering your palm tree should be done at least every other day during the hottest parts of the growing season. During winter time, it may be possible to water your palm tree as little as 2-3 times per week, but make sure to gradually cut back your watering schedule. Cutting off the water source too quickly that a palm tree depends on can have devastating consequences (just ask a dead palm tree! Or not, he probably won’t say much). 💀
How much water does a Palm Tree need in Arizona ?
Palm trees love moist and damp soil, so reward your palm trees with the watering they deserve. So, just how much water should you give your palms each time you water? The rule for palm trees planted outdoors is to provide about 1/3 as much water as the size of the container that your palm tree was originally planted in. What does this mean? So, if your palm tree was purchased in a 15 gallon container and then planted outside, you’ll want to supply at least 5 gallons of water every time you water your outdoor palm tree. If you originally bought a 25 gallon tree, then plan on providing at least 8 gallons of water every time your palm tree needs a drink.
Unfortunately, there is a lot of bad information on the internet that suggests watering your palm tree the same amount of water as the container in which it was purchased. To put this wild idea into perspective, a “15 gallon” palm tree is planted in a container that is actually about 5 gallons. If you watered your 15 gallon Queen Palm tree with 15 gallons, it may need a life-raft. ⛵
Don’t believe us? Try placing a standard 5-gallon bucket into your “15 gallon” tree container. Does it fit? (That’s what we thought!)
How Fast Do Queen Palms Grow ?
Queen Palm trees in Arizona grow at a rate of about 1-2 feet per year, with the average established Queen Palm tree growing about 18 inches per year. Queen Palm trees that are properly fertilized can achieve a growth rate of over 2 feet per year.
Queen Palm Tree Growth Rate
A Queen Palm tree’s growth rate depends on a variety of environmental factors, including:
Type of Soil (Is it Alkaline or Acidic?)
Watering Schedule (Does your Queen Palm drink like a fish, or is it parched?)
Local Climate (Not climate change, we mean hot vs. cold, humid vs. dry, you know, that old chestnut).
Transplant History (Before the Nursery, how was it dug out of the ground & potted?)
Fertilizer for Queen Palms (Are you using a 2-part Manganese Sulphate & Copper Fungicide feeding & treatment plan? No? That's what we thought!)
Palm Tree Fertilizer
Why fertilize a Palm tree? (Well, why not?) If that answer wasn’t convincing, just know that Queen palm trees are the only palm trees that need fertilized in Arizona. If you don’t have a Queen Palm, you may want to think about planting one.
Even though fertilizer for Queen Palm trees is needed 3-4 times per year, they are still one of the greatest trees that you could ever own. Queen Palm trees are a very low-maintenance tree, compared with large, expensive trimming and pruning that is required every year for larger types of trees. They require far less water than just about any other type of tree (including desert-variety trees such as Mesquite or Palo Verde). Because Queen Palm trees are so good at using minimal amounts of water, they are the perfect complement to any desert landscape.
So, what type of fertilizer for Queen Palms should you use? (I’m glad you asked!)
Queen Palm trees need a proper 2-part fertilizing & fungicide treatment that, in addition to feeding your Queen Palm, also works hard to fight off deadly fungal infections. This 2-part Queen Palm treatment plan targets both the nutrient deficiencies in your Queen Palm’s soil, and also treats the crown of your Queen Palm with a special Fungicide. This Copper Fungicide treatment is designed to fend off airborne fungal spores that can wreak havoc on the health of your Queen Palm. 🌴
Manganese for Palm Trees
Manganese is one of the most important nutrients that a Queen Palm tree needs to grow strong, healthy fronds. Manganese is applied to Queen Palm trees as ‘Manganese Sulphate’, and is a critical soil amendment that can be applied to counteract the devastating effects of highly alkaline soil (think Arizona).
